The PEI dimensions and what they test
McKinsey picks one dimension and goes twenty minutes deep on a single story. Depth beats breadth.
The Personal Experience Interview is not a rapid-fire behavioural round. An interviewer selects one dimension, you offer one story, and they spend fifteen to twenty minutes drilling into your specific actions, your reasoning at each fork, and how you felt. Candidates prepared for five-minute STAR answers run out of material in four.
| Dimension | What they are probing | The evidence they want |
|---|---|---|
| Personal Impact | Did you move people who did not report to you? | A specific person you persuaded, what they objected to, what you changed in your approach |
| Entrepreneurial Drive | Do you create things without being told to? | Something that would not exist if you had not started it, and the risk you personally carried |
| Inclusive Leadership | Can you lead a group through real friction? | A genuine conflict, the different perspectives in the room, and what you did to bring people along |
Two stories per dimension, each prepared to twenty minutes of depth, beats eight stories prepared to three minutes. Write out the three hardest follow-ups you would dread and answer them in advance.
The interviewer is scoring you, not your team. If every sentence is 'we decided' and 'we delivered', there is no evidence about you. Use 'I' for your actions and reserve 'we' for genuine context.
