STAR-L: structure without sounding rehearsed

The classic structure plus the ending most candidates omit.

  1. 1

    Situation: 20 seconds

Just enough context to make the stakes legible. Candidates routinely spend three minutes here and lose the room.

  2. 2

    Task: 15 seconds

What specifically was yours to solve, and why it was hard.

  3. 3

    Action: the bulk of it

What you did, in sequence, with the reasoning at each decision point. This is the part they are scoring.

  4. 4

    Result: 30 seconds

Quantified where possible. 'Cut onboarding from 11 days to 4' beats 'it went much better'.

  5. 5

    Learning: 20 seconds

What you would do differently. This is the step most candidates skip, and it is what makes the story sound like self-awareness rather than a highlight reel.
