The Sea Wolf Shelf Study
A diesel spill has settled into the sediment of Kestrel Shelf, a shallow bank off a working fishing coast. The clean-up team wants to treat it biologically rather than dredge it, which means seeding the sediment with microbes that can survive there and break the hydrocarbons down.
Eight candidate strains have come back from the lab. Your first job is a filter, not a judgement call: the shelf has hard tolerances, and a strain either sits inside all of them or it does not belong there at all.
Once you have the eligible strains, you will choose the three that go into the final treatment.
Screen eight strains against the Kestrel Shelf tolerances, then build the strongest legal three-strain treatment from the ones that pass.
Screen. 8 strains, one binary decision each. Nothing is weighed against anything else here, so the only way to drop a point is to read a rule loosely.
Treat. Build the strongest legal blend of 3 from the strains you accepted. Reject one you needed and the best blend stops being reachable, which is exactly how the real task punishes a sloppy filter.
